Microsoft teases yet another Surface announcement on May 23

Microsoft sure is keeping tech journalists busy. Following its big event this week where it revealed Windows 10 S and the Surface Laptop, and then its huge Build conference next week, Microsoft is hosting yet another announcement event on May 23rd – this time in Shanghai. For those keeping track, that’s three events in one month. Unfortunately, the company isn’t providing any hints on what it may be announcing, other than the most generic of captions: On May 23 in Shanghai, Microsoft will show the world what’s next. NASA footage gives us our best look yet at Saturn

The Cassini spacecraft returned the closest, clearest images of Saturn’s atmosphere as it swooped between the gas giant and its rings last month. NASA recently released a video showing an hour’s worth of images in time lapse, so you can make out tiny details in this never-before-explored part of our solar system. The most striking image of the footage is the dark spot at the very beginning, which is actually, according to NASA, “the swirling vortex at the planet’s north pole.” Cassini raced through the gap, which scientists are calling “The Big Empty” as it doesn’t have the high levels of dust…

Justice Department starts criminal probe into Uber

The US Department of Justice (DOJ) has begun a criminal investigation into Uber. The investigation, according to Reuters sources, centers around the so-called “Greyball” tool that helped drivers avoid local transportation regulators. And frankly, it’s about time. Uber has played fast and loose with the rules since its inception, something that’s finally catching up to the $60 billion ride-sharing company. Since launching in 2010, Uber’s drawn fire for rampant sexism, skirting the rules at every turn, and attempting to use software to spy on drivers (and riders) for a competitive advantage. If anything, the news that it’s just now under criminal investigation serves…

Entrepreneurs don’t pour all their energy into building startups just to have a patent troll attack them with patents of questionable quality. The patent troll problem is big and growing, posing a threat to startups and established companies alike, costing companies millions in defensive litigation fees and diverting money that would be better spent on innovation.
